A batik lungi is a traditional South Indian garment worn by men across Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Sri Lanka. It is a rectangular length of cotton fabric — typically 2.25 metres long and 47 inches wide — featuring hand-crafted wax-resist batik dye patterns in vibrant colours.
In Kerala, the lungi (also called kaili or mundu) is worn daily — from paddy fields and fishing boats to village markets and temple festivals. The batik variety features intricate patterns including palm trees, elephants, peacocks, lotus flowers, and geometric motifs.
Our Kerala Men Gallery documents 136 portraits of Kerala's working men wearing authentic batik lungis in their natural environment — a living archive of this textile tradition.

Most lungis are free size (one size fits all) and measure approximately 2.25 metres in length and 47 inches (120cm) in width. They are wrapped and tied at the waist, so they fit waist sizes from 28 to 44 inches comfortably.
Hold the lungi open in front of you, wrap it around your waist, and fold the excess fabric at the front, tucking it in or tying a knot. For a half-sarong style (as seen in the Kerala Men Gallery portraits), fold the lungi up to knee height and tie it at the waist. There are also cylinder-style and self-knot styles.
They are essentially the same garment with different regional names. 'Lungi' is the South Indian (Kerala, Tamil Nadu) term, while 'sarong' is used in Southeast Asia and internationally. Both are lengths of fabric wrapped around the waist.
